The Checklist

You go through life armed with a checklist of all the things you love, from music and holiday destinations to roller-coaster rides and animals. So you look for someone else who likes the same things that you do, and in equal measures too. When you bite into a slice of gooey chocolate cake, you include it on your list because you love it so much and want to be with someone who loves it just as much. You lie in bed on a hot summer night with the air-con set to 23 C and think this it, this hits the sweet spot and I should be with someone who likes it just so. The first time you climb to the top of a hill that overlooks the sea, you dream about living there in a house that you build with someone who wants it too.

It's an endless list of things you want, underlined by the desire to find that perfect someone to want them with. And someday, you may end up with that person who takes you to live music shows and comes home one evening with a puppy in a basket. He will book you into a luxurious resort on your anniversary and treat you to candlelight dinners on soft white sands under starless skies. He will be everything you ever wanted in a significant other and then, he will also be nothing. He will never know how your eyes shine as the day segues into night, or how the sand tickles the spaces between your toes when you walk alone on the beach. He will never lie with you in a field of grass and watch your lips softly move as you sing to yourself. He will never sense your loneliness or send you warm breeze across the wires. And most of all, he will never know how much of you is really you when he's around.

And someday, you could also meet someone with just one thing on his checklist - You. He may be sitting in a dark room surrounded by walls that no longer exist. Walls that he’s knocked down just to be with you, under the cover of stars in the middle of the desert. He may not believe in the same god as you but he will believe in you. He may not love dogs or cats or goldfish as much as you do, but he will love you. His favourite cake may not be chocolate but his favourite taste will be you. He may never have crossed your mind earlier but now, he will be the only thing on it. And it will all make sense because you will finally see that it doesn’t matter what you love or who you love it with. The only thing that matters is how much you are loved for being you.

Good one Gia. For somehow just now remembered this quote which I read somewhere long back. "You say my eyes are beautiful. I say because they are looking at you". - Vishnu
