Live the wondrous life
I wish for me
The blue and the yellow
I cannot paint
The green and the gold
I cannot touch
Smile every place that you go
Spread out your arms and
Fall back on the grass
In open fields
Sit on the edge of every cliff
Like I used to
Run along the beaches and
Lie upon the shores
Waiting silently as the waves
Crash against you
Taking all of you with them
But leaving you behind
Just the same
Look at the Northern Lights and
Think about the reflection
Of their glow, hidden somewhere
In the corners of my unfulfilled being
Walk along hot, dusty roads
Till your feet are sore
Then smile at the little girl
Who brings you a cup of tea
That refreshes you like
Nothing else can
Her smile, not the tea
Pack your entire world in a bag
String it across your shoulders
Hold on for dear life
Then leave it all behind
In one split second discard
That entire world
To find a whole new one
Put it together with the waters
That you swim in
And the rivers that you cross
Piece it together with
The smell of the earth
That wafts through your being
And the green leaves that
Line your heart
And cushion your soul
Drop your dreams into
Pools of ice
And pull out the songs of
The ones you’ve left behind
The dreams of the ones that
Came before you
Walk along with them on
All the miles to come
Like you’ve walked
Along with mine
And my wanderlove.
I had written this one, in 2003, for a blogger friend who used to travel a lot. I don't travel as much as I would like to, so I live vicariously. And sometimes, I write a poem or two.
