This is Chocolate Cake. But you already know that, don't you?
It's not just any chocolate cake. It's THE cake. The one I'll always remember.
It started out as a plain and simple chocolate cake. No fuss and no frills. Made with creamed butter and sugar, melted dark chocolate, fluffy eggs, fine flour and flavourings. It was baked at a 180 degrees C for about 40 minutes. It rose in the warmth of the oven like a beautiful souffle and came out spreading the joy of vanilla, coffee and cocoa. That's how it was meant to stay. Just a warm gooey cake to dig into at a cosy birthday party.
But there were a few things in store for it that it had no clue about.
A few hours later the cake was turned upside down and sliced horizontally right through the middle. Some generous sprinklings of mild brown sugar syrup, light drizzlings of dark rum, and thick swoops of melted chocolate later and it looked good enough to... well, eat! It was transformed into something rich, dark and mysterious. Like a luscious dream. Sensuous and smooth. Exotic and intense.
Just like life's sudden spontaneity, corners that offer no clue of what's around them on the other side, little moments that turn into something big.
I used to tell myself I was a fool to believe in magic. I craved for chemistry even in little things. When you live a lot inside your head, real life can get dull and boring. So you always want to savour the crazy, passionate moments. You want to remain lost in the fluff forever.
Then one day you take a leap of faith and hop over those imaginary borders you've drawn all around you. There's only one way to do it - quick and sharp! If you're lucky, you will be pleasantly surprised. If not, you can lick your wounds for 5 seconds and then try again :-)
Some days are safe, like plain chocolate cake. And then there are days that take you by complete surprise. Magical, electrifying, the perfect fit. Just like the people you meet ;-)

@Pat - How do you always say the nicest things? Now, that's a true art! Pat-a-cake Pat-a-cake baker's man... did you ever get teased with that song when you were a kid? If the kids at your school were as stupid as me, I'm sure you did!
@Knife - Sorry, a cake like this appears out of thin air only when there's magic. Think you can handle that?
