A called me last night, her voice shaking as she burst into tears. Her father was in the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital and the doctors had just informed her that his condition had turned critical.

I tried to collect myself, and asked her to relax and calm down. I wasn't sure if I was being helpful at all but I tried anyway. He would be fine, he would come through, I said. I asked her if I could go to the hospital but she said no as they would not let me in at that hour.

I repeatedly asked her not to worry and said be positive. I did not know what else to say. Then I said, please don't hesitate to call me no matter what time it is. I normally put my phone on silent mode just before I hit the sack, but last night I told her I wouldn't be doing that. Call me if there's anything you need, anything. Ok, she said before hanging up.

Then the entire night I just kept hoping that there would be no call from A. Not because I didn't want to be disturbed. But because I knew that she would only call if things had taken a turn for the worse. I knew that as long as my phone did not ring, A's Dad was ok.

Thankfully, it didn't ring.

As of now, A's Dad is still in the ICU and his condition hasn't improved much, but it hasn't gotten worse either. So I'm hoping for the best. I hope he's out of the hospital soon, and back home where he belongs.
