Wish You Were Here

I have always loved postcards and everytime someone I knew travelled, I would ask them to mail me some from the places they went to. These days, nobody bothers so I've stopped asking (What? You want me to actually hold a pen in my hand and write? And lick a stamp and drop the card in a box? Are you crazy? Do they even have post-boxes anymore?).

I would still love to receive postcards though. It's like holding a piece of that faraway place in your hands, taking in the same air, feeling the same feelings as the person who sends them. I think when I start travelling again I'm going to send myself postcards from all the places I go to.

Till then, I have these. I found some of the postcards people used to send me earlier. I remember collecting them carefully but I find that a lot have gone missing. These were all I could find.
They were sent to me by my brother (the first 3), my cousins (2 out of the 3 from Singapore) and a couple of friends and acquaintances. Two of whom are dead, I believe. Sadly I'm not in touch with any of these people anymore, except for my brother of course.

I bought these postcards from Egypt. When we were crossing the Suez Canal. Our ship is now at present at Malta and we're at anchorage. We'll most probably be sailing for UK tomorrow.
Hope you've written lots of letters because I did not receive any of your letters at Malta. We will be reaching UK in 13-15 days time. Hope the situation is back to normal and peace prevails in Bombay.
There is some happy news that after unloading our cargo at UK i.e. Belfast and Liverpool, we might be loading cargo for Bombay. At present we're not sure, we will be getting definite information when we reach UK.
Till then keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best.

Another thing to blame on the internet. For years a good part of my holiday was spent buying, writing and posting cards to friends and family. Even I rarely do it now and I'm glad to have a collection still in the attic.

The last time I wanted to sent postcards, the post-office closed an hour early because-
1. It is a small village and the post master did not expect tourists to drop in after lunch.
2. The next day is a government holiday and why would anyone want to send a postcard?

I hope to remember the next time I am in a touristy place. :-(

@Pat - Come to think of it, I'm also guilty of the crime. But I hardly travel these days!

@Hyde - This post office must have been in my village in Goa!

I was in Aihole. :-) Are post offices like this in all Goan villages?
