I'd like to make it with you...

So this is the best school that I've ever gone to. I get to play with sharp objects, wear cool caps and munch in class. I can actually use the excuse that the dog ate up my homework. I can also interchange dog with mom, dad, brother, sister, and neighbour's aunt. In fact, that will impress my teacher even more!

I never want to be late to class and I'm paying attention every single second. I love it when the teacher repeats herself. And if I'm ever asked to step out of the classroom and go to the principal's office, I'd be very sad!

Yesterday I had to knead dough and shape it into bread rolls. It was the toughest thing I've baked so far! No hand mixer, no dough kneader, no bread maker, nada. Just your two hands and an alert mind. Now, I have to mention here that I hate this part of cooking/baking. At home my maid makes my daily bread i.e. rotis. And on the days that she doesn't turn up I have to eat rice or horrible store-bought bread.

Anyway I took the challenge head on, as did everyone else in class. It was so much fun! When you know exactly what's happening as you mix the flour, the sugar and the fresh yeast, it's fascinating. I was thinking about what a wonderful blend of nature and science it was. How centuries ago, our ancestors must have dicovered and perfected this art through trial and error. I've always believed that bread making is an art and have admired people who could do it. But I also thought that it would be too difficult for me to try.

It is tough, but learning how to do it is fun. The boys are much better at it, I observed. I was lucky enough to have three of them helping me. Those darn shapes had me flustered. At first, I struggled like a lost babe in the woods, then someone looked at me and I smiled or rather, broke out into a goofy grin. Next thing I know, he was helping me. And so were a couple of others. I finally realised why my friend makes such a big deal about my "infectious" smile, as he likes to call it :-)

Seriously though, the boys in class are so much sweeter. Don't get me started on the women! So far only one has spoken to me and of course, they were all extremely personal questions! Boundary-challenged is what I say! Hello? Why do you want to know who I live with it and why I live alone? And all this before even exchanging names!

Women are so bloody nosey, and that's another reason I prefer hanging out with men. You can spend hours just hanging out, discussing Tiger Wood's sexploits, sharing some chilled beer, and arguing about whether the monorail and metro are really going to help solve the city's traffic or worsen it further by attracting more migrants. All this without revealing your childhood traumas, relationship issues or the colour of your underwear (this one the boy's wouldn't mind knowing, I'm sure!)

Here's a picture of what I did in class yesterday (taken on my phone so not very good). The ten rolls on the right are mine. We had to share trays and, as you can see, my partner's are much better than mine. I told you, the boys are really good. This was his first attempt!

P.S. The title of this post is from my favourite Bread song. Yeah, I'm corny! Didn't you know that already?

I like the new you! You have taken on yet another dimension. Sooo proud of you! Happy you are meeting nice boys who are willing to "make it with you." Funny, I was supposed to try to make bread yesterday but that fell through. You should take your camera to class and take pics of the stuff you cook and just the down times in the kitchen. Even if you never post them here, you will have them to cherish for a lifetime.

Thanks love! Actually it's the same old me. I just realised that this is how I used to be earlier! Was just hibernating for a really long time :-)
Hey, don't get excited about these "nice boys". They're just sweet, helpful, friendly kids. It's a good thing we don't have a handsome older male teacher. Knowing me, I'd be carving our initials in hearts with arrows on the tables by now ;-) Salt n pepper hair does weird things to me!
I keep taking my camera without the batteries. I will take pix and mail them to you. There's hardly any down times tho, they're working us like slaves already. But we're all lovin' it!

@Dewdrop - I wish you could too, I come home with the loot everyday and there's no one to eat except my maid. She's smiling all the time these days :-)

@Bluemist - You never heard of baking school? It's one of the most important schools in the world my dear. Go enrol yourself in one, you won't regret it!

@Knife - Whether they give me homework or not, I know you will ;-) Come back soon and you can have anything you want.

@Pat - LOL! That's not a pretty thought when you buy your bread from someone else... *shudder shudder*

@Kedar - Thanks dude. The links are not working though. Will try again later.

Caribbean boys can be EXTREMELY nosy! Sheer Almshouse can verify this one.

Man, I'm hungry reading about all this food.

I'm still laughing at Pat's comment.
